He Who Fights With Monsters, Book 4: Home Release Date: Everything We Know So Far
He Who Fights With Monsters, Book 4: Home by Shirtaloon comes out on . It is a 722-page hardcover from AETHON's Vault line, and it is not a new chapter of Jason Asano's story. It is a new edition of the series' fourth book, the one where Jason finds himself back in the world he came from [1].
That matters a great deal if you're a long-time fan, so let's start there.
Is Home a new He Who Fights with Monsters book?
No. The Amazon listing labels it "Book 4 of 13" in the series [1]. Thirteen main books are already out, and the description on the listing matches the story of the existing He Who Fights with Monsters 4: a protagonist forced to confront what he has become in his time away, who feels more alien than ever, and whose old world is hiding secrets he never knew [1].
So if you've read He Who Fights with Monsters 4, you already know what happens in He Who Fights With Monsters, Book 4: Home. This is the rare release on my calendar where you could, in theory, read the ending before it comes out.
What's new is the format. It's a hardcover published under AETHON: Vault, running to 722 pages [1]. The listing credits Travis Deverell alongside Shirtaloon as authors [1].
There is one thing I can't confirm. The hardcover edition of He Who Fights with Monsters advertises a bonus short story exclusive to that deluxe edition. Nothing published so far says whether the Book 4 hardcover gets something similar, so I wouldn't count on extra material until the publisher says so.
When does He Who Fights with Monsters Book 4: Home come out?
The hardcover is out on , according to the Amazon listing [1].
Has the release date moved?
There's no sign of it. No earlier date has been listed for this edition, and the date above is the only one on record. Hardcover reissues of books that are already written and edited tend to be steadier than new novels, since nobody is waiting on a final draft. Still, dates can shift, so it's worth keeping an eye on it.
How anticipated is Home?
Modestly, and for good reason. Of the 86 upcoming books with a confirmed date on our calendar, it ranks 70th by readers on Hardcover, the reading site our numbers come from.
That's exactly what you'd expect for a new edition of a book a lot of fans have already read. Interest in the series itself is a different story. Amazon's listing describes He Who Fights with Monsters as a "multi-million-copy" series [1]. On Hardcover, He Who Fights with Monsters is the most-read book of the 13, with 1,523 readers. Hardcover is far smaller than Goodreads or StoryGraph, so that's a lot of people for it, and it's a sign of how many readers start with Jason's first day in a world of magic and monsters.
As is usual for a long series, readership drops book by book: on Hardcover, each book in order is read by fewer people than the one before, from He Who Fights with Monsters at the top down to He Who Fights with Monsters 13. That's less a verdict on the later books and more the natural shape of any series that runs to 13 volumes.
What is Home about?
A mild warning first: because Book 4 picks up after a big turn at the end of Book 3, even the basic premise gives a little away. If you haven't read the first three books, you might want to skip to the reading advice further down.
Still here? In He Who Fights With Monsters, Book 4: Home, Jason has had an unexpected homecoming and isn't sure there's still a place for him in the world he left behind. Forced to confront what he has become in his time away, he feels more alien than ever [1].
But his old world is hiding secrets he never knew. As he unravels what has been hidden from him his whole life, he discovers that he might fit in better than ever, and that he may be exactly what the world needs [1].
That's the shift that sets up the next stretch of the series, which is part of why Book 4 is a sensible candidate for a showpiece hardcover.
He Who Fights with Monsters recap: books 1 to 3
These are spoiler-light, built from each book's premise.
- He Who Fights with Monsters: Jason wakes up in a mysterious world of magic and monsters and goes from office-supplies-store middle manager to interdimensional adventurer, which is at least a sideways move in terms of dealing with difficult people. He tries to be heroic, but it's hard to be good when all your powers are evil. Cannibals, cultists, wizards and monsters all turn up, and that's just the first day.
- He Who Fights with Monsters 2: Jason is settling into his new life when a contest draws young elites to the city of Greenstone. He needs companions to stand a chance, while the city's leaders deal with betrayal and a vast enemy that Jason has unknowingly crossed before.
- He Who Fights with Monsters 3: Riding high, Jason and his team prepare for what's coming, but his personal enemies have plans, and the greater foes plaguing his new home have one powerful card left to play. The stakes, as the blurb puts it, can be greater than life and death.
Spoiler recap: books 4 to 13
Spoiler warning. The premises below reveal where Jason ends up after Book 3 and what happens to both of his worlds. If you're new to the series, stop here and jump to the next section.
- He Who Fights with Monsters 4: The homecoming. Jason struggles to fit back into the world he left, then learns it has been hiding secrets his entire life. This is the book being reissued as He Who Fights With Monsters, Book 4: Home.
- He Who Fights with Monsters 5: Jason's homeworld is not what he thought, and the rest of the planet is close to learning the same thing. Magic is on the rise, and even as Jason's power reaches new heights, his best still isn't enough.
- He Who Fights With Monsters 6: The world teeters on the brink, and the people who should be saving it ignore Jason's warnings. He resolves to save it anyway by seizing a power no mortal should touch, his first step into a wider cosmos, and he has to decide what home truly means.
- He Who Fights with Monsters 7: Jason arrives at a kingdom in peril and, for once, it isn't his job to save it. He tries to rest, which is difficult when a princess finds him inconveniently alive and an ancient king turns up at his barbecue.
- He Who Fights With Monsters 8: After a long-awaited reunion, Jason works on moving past old traumas and gets back to adventuring, while enemies who have lurked in the background start stepping into the light.
- He Who Fights with Monsters 9: A LitRPG Adventure (He Who Fights with Monsters, Book 9): Jason wants to get back to adventuring away from world-changing events, but angelic new adversaries, patient and remorseless, bring the fight to him and his team.
- He Who Fights with Monsters 10: After the devastating attack on Yaresh, Jason's actions bring unwelcome attention from allies and enemies alike, and a hidden underground civilisation shifts everyone's plans.
- He Who Fights with Monsters 11: Jason and his companions are scattered across a strange realm, partly warped by his own mind, facing angelic despots and the power of an undead god while trying to save a friend.
- He Who Fights with Monsters 12: Twenty years after he was pulled into this world, Jason has saved civilisations and the Earth several times but never had the simple adventures he was promised. Having just come back from a conflict where the battlefield was his own soul, he finally wants a few.
- He Who Fights with Monsters 13: Bursting with cosmic power and with allies at his back, Jason faces an Earth with fracturing magical factions, the aftermath of a monster cataclysm and a vampire war on the verge of resuming. The only thing stopping him taking over is that he doesn't want to, for now.
Do I need to read the earlier books first?
Yes. He Who Fights With Monsters, Book 4: Home is the fourth book of a continuous story, and its whole premise rests on where He Who Fights with Monsters 3 leaves Jason. Picking it up cold would be like arriving at someone's homecoming party without knowing they'd been away.

Should I buy Home if I already own Book 4?
That depends on whether you collect editions. The story, as far as anything published shows, is the same one you've already read. The draw is a 722-page hardcover from AETHON: Vault [1]. If you're a completist with a shelf to fill, that may be reason enough. If you read for new story, your wait is for whatever comes after He Who Fights with Monsters 13, and no date has been announced for that.
How do I find out the moment there's news?
If you track your reading on Goodreads or StoryGraph, shelving He Who Fights With Monsters, Book 4: Home there keeps it on your radar, but neither will tap you on the shoulder if the date changes or a fourteenth book gets announced. Refreshing an author page every few weeks is how most of us end up learning about new books long after they've come out.
